Job Description

The Department of Physics at Old Dominion University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor of Physics to begin in Fall 2026. This is a 10-month tenure track appointment.
Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:
  • Teach physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, consistent with the academic programs of the department;
  • Join the existing Experimental Nuclear Physics Group, which leads many aspects of the Jefferson Lab research program and is planning for the future Electron Ion Collider;
  • Lead a research program in Experimental Nuclear Physics and seek new external funding.
  • Teaching and service responsibilities of the position are commensurate with other Carnegie Research-1 institutions.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications

A Ph.D. or equivalent in Experimental Nuclear Physics, or a closely related field.
 

Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities

1. A minimum of 2 years research experience (can be inclusive of graduate training);
2. Demonstrated ability in the conception, execution, and/or analysis of nuclear physics experiments;
3. A strong interest in the ongoing research program at Jefferson Lab;
4. Ability to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, demonstrated either by formal classroom / lab teaching or professional presentations.
 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the conception, execution, and/or analysis of nuclear physics experiments.
  • Research program aligned with the national priorities outlined in 2023 NSAC Long Range Plan “A New Era of Discovery”.
  • A strong publication record.
  • Experience preparing peer-reviewed external grant proposals or experiment proposals.
  • Demonstrated excellence in Teaching.
