Spintronics is emerging as the technology to supplement the growth of semiconductor technology, by incorporating magnetism in the semiconductor devices. Magnetic Random Access Memory (MRAM) is already available in niche products and is expected to gain a prominent place in future memory devices. The research will look at the fundamental understanding of spintronics materials and tailoring them for potential applications in MRAM and other device applications
Magnonics :
Magnonics can be called the magnetics equivalent of photonics. This field deals with spin wave propagation, which are specially interesting to physicists. The applications are not immediately seen.
Magnetic Recording :
Magnetic recording does not sound attractive to those who are not really familiar with the technology. It is a technology that used “nanotechnology” even before the term was coined. The frontiers of mathematics, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering are exploited to make a hard disk that packs each bit at an area of 620 square-nanometres (Area of Singapore ~ 620 square kilometres). It is needless to say that the physics and materials challenges in magnetic recording are interesting
