I am a “bioorganic chemist,” an organic chemist interested in the workings of living organisms. In particular, my research group focuses on creating “artificial enzymes,” synthetic systems designed to mimic the catalytic properties of naturally occurring enzymes. With rare exceptions, however, synthetic catalysts display activities many orders of magnitude below those exhibited by enzymes, and it is our hope to discover procedures for generating systems with far higher catalytic activities
