POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Department of Mathematical Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is seeking a data scientist with expertise in statistical modeling for big data and/or high-performance data analytics for a tenure-track position at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. Successful candidates are expected to develop productive research programs, mentor and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and to direct Ph.D. dissertations in data science. Candidates with experience in industry and/or applied interdisciplinary research projects are encouraged to apply. Anticipated appointment date is fall 2021.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Mathematical Sciences, consisting of nearly 30 tenure and tenure-track faculty, contribute to interdisciplinary programs across the university including the College of Science Computational Science Program. Notable faculty accomplishments of the productive faculty include the publication of high impact peer reviewed manuscripts and annual research expenditures of $1.5m. The faculty have significant expertise in the areas of algebra and combinatorics, fixed point theory, statistics, bioinformatics, computational science, topology, data science and applied mathematics. An exciting development for the Department is the recent approval of a new Data Science doctoral program that will commence in spring 2021. Lastly, UTEP consistently ranks in the top ten by Diverse Issues in Higher Education for Mathematics and Statistics degrees conferred to Hispanic undergraduate and master’s degree students. Southwest University Park, located a mile away in lively downtown El Paso, is home to the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres and the El Paso Locomotive, a professional soccer team founded in 2019.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in data science or a related field, a strong record of research accomplishments and the capacity to secure extramural funding. Preference will be given to those with postdoctoral experience for candidates at the rank of Assistant Professor.
