Statistics or Mathematics Contract Faculty Position

Main Campus - Boston, MA

R08588

The Division of Mathematics, Computing, and Statistics (MCS) at Simmons University is seeking applicants for a one year contract (non-tenure-track) faculty position in Statistics or Mathematics, to begin August 15, 2022 (start date negotiable). As a mission-driven and inclusive institution, we invite applications from candidates who share our passion and commitment to empowering women and individuals who do not conform to the gender binary to thrive in their careers. Depending on the successful candidate's experience and professional goals, we offer several different possibilities for position title and responsibilities.

Located in Boston's historic Fenway area, Simmons has a strong tradition of empowering women and of challenging traditional gender roles and expanding opportunities for historically marginalized groups. Simmons University was one of the first higher education institutions to focus on preparing women to become leaders and has evolved to become a university offering a women-centered undergraduate program, with graduate programs open to all. MCS is a collegial and supportive community of teachers and scholars within a uniquely multidisciplinary College. Simmons faculty and staff are truly committed to our mission of preparing students to become champions of social justice and equitable leaders in their professions and their communities. This commitment and pride make for a dynamic workplace. Simmons University strives for inclusive excellence in all aspects of an individual's community experience: One of our strategic goals is to become the most inclusive campus in New England. As a University committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we seek candidates with a demonstrated ability to work with and empower students across a broad range of social and personal identities and perspectives. We particularly encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups.

MCS houses majors in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, and Data Science, as well as several other interdisciplinary majors. Approximately three quarters of all undergraduates at Simmons take at least one course in statistics, all of which are taught by MCS. Because so many students take Statistics at Simmons, we work closely with a variety of disciplines and work hard to create an inclusive environment.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include teaching a wide range of courses in statistics and/or mathematics through the calculus sequence and being an active participant in service within the Division and the University. Service responsibilities include but are not limited to: advising Division majors, supporting the growing Statistics and Data Science programs, contributing to online undergraduate degree programs, and being an active member of select Division and University committees. We seek an innovative educator with demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring, creative curriculum development, a passion for empowering students through teaching, and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration inside and outside the University.

Qualifications: We are open to individuals interested in, and qualified for a 10-month, non-tenure-track faculty position. Please note that we are filling only one position at this time. Candidates must have earned a graduate degree in Statistics or Mathematics, or a related field (or expect to earn such a degree by Fall 2022).

Professional Development and Support: As One Simmons, we are committed to the development of our faculty and to providing opportunities for faculty to engage in College and University leadership efforts. These opportunities may include participating in inter-faculty grant/research development, institutional leadership development opportunities, and mentoring/coaching opportunities.

Salary and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Simmons University participates in TIAA/CREF and offers excellent benefits packages, including tuition reimbursement for dependents at Simmons and other institutions.

Instructions to Applicants: To apply, please submit a cover letter (including the title of the position for which you are applying), a CV, and a teaching statement. Additional supporting materials that document excellence in teaching, such as course evaluations and syllabi of courses taught, are optional and welcomed.

Application review will begin immediately, and will end June 19th. Contact information for three professional references will be requested of selected applicants following initial review of applications.

For further information, please contact the Program Director for Mathematics and Statistics, Margaret Menzin (menzin@simmons.edu).

Instructions to Applicants: Please upload all applicable application materials (e.g. resume/cv, cover letter, writing sample, teaching philosophy, etc.) in the Application Materials box on page 2 ("My Experience") of this application. Documents can be uploaded individually or as a combined document (e.g. PDF).

Simmons University is committed to inclusive excellence in all aspects of an individual's community experience. As a university committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, Simmons encourages applications from all under-represented groups. Simmons is committed to creating, developing, promoting, and enhancing inclusive hiring practices-at all levels, for all positions-ensuring diverse talent pools and the delivery of a consistent positive candidate experience. Simmons is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to continuing to develop a more diverse faculty, staff, student body, and curriculum.
