Job Description

Applications are invited for a faculty position in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Old Dominion University (ODU), starting in Fall 2024. The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their field (2/1 teach load) and perform research and service, including supervising doctoral students. The appointment will be at the Assistant Professor rank, or, in exceptional cases, appointment at the rank of Associate Professor may be considered. Preference will be given to applicants whose research is in the area of applied and computational mathematics, but exceptional candidates in other fields that complement and enhance the existing research groups in statistics and data science will also be considered.

Old Dominion University is a research (R1) university. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is one of seven degree-granting departments in the College of Sciences and currently has 44 full-time faculty members, including 24 on the tenured/tenure track and 20 lecturers. The Department has robust undergraduate and graduate programs: a B.S. degree program in Mathematics with more than 170 undergraduate majors; and M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in Computational and Applied Mathematics with options in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Biostatistics, and Big Data Analytics with approximately 40 graduate students.

The Department receives substantial state support and peer-reviewed research grant support, from NSFNASANIHNIA, DoD, VDEQVSGC and other agencies. It is also supported by endowment funds. Many opportunities exist for collaboration and interaction with faculty members in the Department, other Departments of the College of Sciences and the University, the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) of the University and at nearby institutions: Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS); the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA); the NASA Langley Research Center; and the Jefferson Laboratory.       • Candidates for an Assistant Professor appointment must demonstrate strong potential for obtaining external research funding.
      • Candidates for an Associate Professor appointment must have demonstrated research excellence and a solid external research funding record.

     

Minimum Qualifications - Education or training

Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, or a related field.
