  • Full-time Fixed Term 18 months. Base Salary: $94,629 p.a. – $101,018 p.a. plus leave loading and a generous employer’s contribution to superannuation.

About the opportunity
The Clean Combustion Group at the University of Sydney has an international reputation in the field of turbulent combustion, combustion modelling and advanced laser diagnostics. They are currently inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Associate in Computations of Reacting and Non-Reacting Particle-Laden Flows.

The position is funded by the Australian Research Council and will be held in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering and successful applicants will be required to:

  • correctly simulate the dynamics and evolution of droplets and solid particles in turbulent flows loaded with a dense spray which atomises and reacts while producing solid particles.
  • Ensure the critical atomization process is fully accounted for along with the chemistry involved in the combustion process and subsequent synthesis of particles.
  • The long-term objective is to optimize the synthesis of functional materials using Flame Spray Pyrolysis.

  • PhD or near completion in Engineering or Science, or a related discipline.
  • Excellent proven skills in the fields of numerical combustion, turbulence modelling, spray combustion and/or chemical kinetics development.
  • Experience in large eddy simulations, sub-grid scale modelling, development and reduction of chemical kinetic mechanisms would be useful.
  • Expert knowledge of computational fluid dynamics and basic knowledge of heat and mass transfer is assumed.

About us
The Clean Combustion Groups specific research issues include the combustion of bio-fuels, turbulence-chemistry interactions in flames ranging from fully premixed to stratified and non-premixed, auto-ignition of both gaseous and liquid fuels, spray atomisation, combustion safety in deflagrations, oxy-combustion and quenching of radicals on solid surfaces. Many of the burners developed by the group are now established as international benchmarks for the development and validation of numerical tools in combustion. Our computational codes are also used by various international research institutions.

Both experimental and numerical projects are conducted in parallel providing a platform for continuous development and validation. The combustion laboratory is one of a handful of laboratories around the world with advanced laser diagnostics capabilities such as high-speed PIV and high speed LIF (10kHz) as well as standard PIV, LDV, PDA, Raman, Rayleigh and LIF. Computational capabilities include Large Eddy Simulations (LES), Probability Density Function (PDF) and Multiple Mapping Conditioning (MMC) approaches; as well as more standard RANS based methods.
