Position overview Position title: Assistant Researcher

The base salary range, from the salary table(s), for this position is $87,100 - $113,900. Off-scale salaries' and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position description

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a multidisciplinary research laboratory focused on genome engineering and potential applications in agriculture, microbiology, and biomedicine. It is a joint venture between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, with the administrative operations located on the Berkeley campus. This position is located at the UC Berkeley campus.

The IGI is presently seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to oversee operations, and to initiate and guide collaborations on experimental design for the custom-made automated tissue culture robot. This will be around 50% of the position's duties.

The remaining 50% will be dedicated to independent research on the use of genome editing technology to create inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) that are used to develop better models/tools and, separately, better therapies.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree).

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
4 years of postdoctoral experience.

Preferred qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent international degree in Chemical, Biological Engineering, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, Biochemistry.
  • Experience in automated tissue culture including mammalian cell culture, high throughput liquid handling and assay development, robotics, imaging, and systems engineering.
  • Experience in human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) culturing and differentiation.
  • Experience in developing therapeutic strategies with translational potential using human pluripotent stem cells.
  • Experience with systematic evaluation of the genetic components involved in human diseases.
  • Experience in engineering and improving genome editing tools.
  • Experience writing, leading, and managing grants, and securing own funding.
  • Experience with mentorship of undergraduates, graduate students, and/or technicians.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, participate in efficient and open in collaboration, and engage with a diverse group of researchers. Innovative, and able to synergize various ideas and approaches, while exercising sound judgment to evaluate and take acceptable risks.

Experience and interest in the use of genome editing technology to create inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to target neurodegenerative disease and cancers.
