Position Summary
The research lab of John Crane, MD, PhD, is actively recruiting for a Research Technician II.

  • Working safely with pathogenic bacteria and/or antibiotic-resistant bacteria under Biosafety Level-2 conditions. Prepare bacterial inocula for animal infection experiments and in vitro experiments. Ensure disposal of regulated medical waste using proper procedures.
  • Prepare antibiotic-containing microbiology media for detection and quantitation of emergence of antibiotic resistance in vitro and in vivo.
  • Assist in rabbit surgery experiments as surgical assistant in animal Operating Room using sterile technique.
  • Analyze intestinal fluid from rabbits for markers of inflammation such as myeloperoxidase (MPO) and other markers.
  • Perform a variety of other biochemical assays such as uric acid assays, Bio-Rad protein assays, Shiga toxin assays, etc. using the 96 well spectrophotometric plate reader
  • Perform real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) experiments to analyze bacteria for acquisition of antibiotic resistance genes.
  • Perform gel shift experiments to analyze binding of proteins of interest, such as RecA, to DNA .
  • Help supervise students doing rotations in the laboratory.
  • Keep track of amounts of chemicals and supplies on hand; Order or re-order chemicals and supplies when needed using the UB eReq system.
  • We may resume growing mammalian cells under sterile conditions and use for experiments such as adherence assays, cell death assays, ATP release, etc.
  • Photograph mammalian cells and bacteria using microscope and digital camera
  • Analyze data from experiments using Microsoft Excel; graph data using GraphPad Prism graphing software
  • Keep track of amounts of chemicals and supplies on hand; Order or re-order chemicals and supplies when needed using the UB eReq system.
  • Communicate scientific results with colleagues including collaborators
  • Maintain accurate records of experiments in the form of a laboratory notebook.
  • Wash laboratory dishes and glassware using the automatic glassware washer.
  • Perform other laboratory chores such as autoclaving, sanitizing the water system, changing CO2 tanks for CO2 incubator, autoclaving and disposal of biomedical waste, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a science-related major with 1 year of laboratory experience.

Master’s Degree
