Job Description Summary

The Department of Animal Sciences at Auburn University is seeking applications for a nine-month, tenure-track position in Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the rank of assistant professor. The successful candidate will have 60% research and 40% instruction appointment. The projected start date is August 1, 2024.

Responsibilities: This position requires an individual who is motivated to excel in research productivity, scholarship, teaching, and student mentoring commensurate with the land grant mission at Auburn University. Research priorities for this position will focus broadly on overcoming challenges and leveraging opportunities associated with increasing our nutritional security through enhancing the sustainability of food production systems. The successful candidate’s research program should emphasize biochemical and molecular approaches aimed at establishing a productive research program in nutrigenomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and/or bioinformatics to solve issues relating to food animal nutrition, growth physiology, reproductive performance, health, and/or disease resistance. The successful candidate will develop and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program involving interdisciplinary collaboration. We are particularly interested in strong candidates who will complement our existing strengths. Areas of expertise may include but are not limited to biochemistry/biophysics of nucleic acids, epigenetics or/and cellular and molecular signaling, gene-nutrient metabolism, the microbiome, developmental biology, tissue growth biology and/or animal health. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with other scientists within, but not limited to, the Colleges of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, and/or Human Sciences, Alabama Agricultural Experiment Stations, and industry towards the development of a livestock biochemistry program. Additionally, the incumbent will teach an undergraduate-level course in biochemistry. Departmental, college, and university committee service is expected.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a related field by the position start date. Ideally, the selected individual will have experience and training in biochemistry, biotechnology, omics technologies, small molecule metabolites, and/or computational biochemistry, and the ability to independently develop and conduct research in this area. Documented evidence of individual and/or collaborative research and/or teaching resulting in peer-reviewed publications is required. The selected individual must possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills. The candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have postdoctoral research experience and evidence of extramural funding efforts. Experience in developing new and/or teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in biochemistry and mentoring at the graduate and undergraduate levels is also desired.
