The Department of Physiology and Biophysics has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Research Scientist position in the field of Molecular Physiology and Neuroscience. We seek a candidate who uses cutting-edge approaches to address physiological problems that have strong translational relevance.

The goal of the position is to use cryo-EM-based technologies to elucidate structural basis for temperature-dependent gating of TRPV-family ion channels.
There will be two main directions,

* The first is to conduct structural studies of channels in lipid environments under different conditions. Biochemical preparation and characterization, biophysical analysis as well as structure determination by single particle cryo-EM, model building, refinement and validation will be combined to advance this line of research.

* The second is to design and construct a new temperature-clamping plunger that will be suitable to heat up the cryo-EM specimen in a temperature range that is physiologically relevant and will achieve sub-millisecond time resolutions in temperature jump, and high-stability at the clamped temperature right before flash-freezing of the specimens in liquid ethane. These two lines of studies are critical parts of the main project.
