The College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) and the Connected Systems Institute (CSI) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) invite applications for a tenured faculty member to be the Director of Research for CSI, with a start date of August 2025 or earlier. This strategic partnership between CEAS and CSI seeks to strengthen and expand our research leadership in Advanced Manufacturing and Industry 4.0.

The Connected Systems Institute (CSI) provides education, research, and programs to develop talent and expertise in Industry 4.0 technologies and applications. CSI is a collaboration among UWM, Rockwell Automation, Microsoft, and other industry and academic partners. With Microsofts recent decision to establish its AI Manufacturing Co-Innovation Lab at UWM, CSI is at the center of a rapidly growing AI manufacturing ecosystem. Greater Milwaukee is home to 400+ engineering firms and more than 1,300 manufacturing firms with annual receipts of 24 billion dollars. The Milwaukee area (Mount Pleasant, WI) has also been selected as the site for a new $1 billion Microsoft data center, to open in 2026. UWM has a long history of industrial collaboration, innovation, and research with its local partners.



Job Summary

The Director of Research will serve as a key member of the CSI leadership team, responsible for shaping and implementing the Institutes research vision and mission. The successful candidate will collaborate with CEAS faculty, faculty from across campus, and industry partners. They will also work with UWM centers and institutes, build highly performing research teams, and contribute to engineering or computer science curriculum. The role involves actively fostering new collaborations.

The successful candidate will provide leadership and collaborate with CEAS faculty as well as faculty from across the university, conducting independent research and leading interdisciplinary teams in Industry 4.0 research. The candidate will work with UWM centers and institutes, build highly effective research teams consisting of professional staff, post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students. As the CSI Research Director, the candidate will serve as a member of the CSI leadership team, responsible for shaping and implementing the research vision and mission of CSI. The candidate will actively collaborate with current industry partners and cultivate new partnerships. While the primary focus is toward research and teaching, as a tenured faculty member in CEAS, the candidate will provide thought leadership around modern curricula related to Industry 4.0, advise students as part of CSI research, and contribute to the broader CEAS community.


Minimum Qualifications

    • A doctoral degree in an appropriate Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related science field, and either holding the rank of associate or full professor with tenure or possessing a distinguished record of scholarly achievements sufficient to meet the criteria for tenure at the rank of associate or full professor at UWM.
    • A strong record of securing external funding, publishing, mentorship, conducting research, and scholarship appropriate with their rank.

 

 


Preferred Qualifications

    • A proven research record in Industry 4.0 topics, including but not limited to: AI manufacturing, lights-out manufacturing, robotics, system integration, sensing and control, industrial software engineering and cybersecurity, edge computing, advanced human-machine interface (including AR/VR, haptics, etc.), cyber-physical systems, additive manufacturing, digital twin, real-time and low latency communications including wireless (5G, WiFi6), constrained networking including Single Pair Ethernet, industrial process simulation and emulation, big data analytics, cloud computing, explainable AI, and others.
    • Demonstrated administrative and research leadership within a center or institute, including experience in personnel management and budget oversight
    • Teaching experience related to Industry 4.0
    • Track record of forming and leading cross-disciplinary research teams that include industrial partners
    • Experience conducting research in collaboration with industrial partners or stakeholders
    • Evidence of the potential to complement and/or strengthen existing CEAS and CSI research programs
