Position description

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at UC Berkeley is a leading research facility focused on advancing our understanding of space and astrophysical phenomena. Since its establishment in 1959, SSL has been at the forefront of research in space sciences, planetary science, and astrophysics, making significant contributions to numerous NASA missions and other groundbreaking scientific projects. Renowned for its innovative approach to instrumentation, data analysis, and mission design, SSL plays a vital role in exploring the mysteries of our universe. We are seeking a Junior/Assistant Specialist to join the UVEX (Ultraviolet Explorer) project, a cutting-edge space mission spearheaded by SSL.

The UVEX mission is designed to explore the universe in ultraviolet light, offering unprecedented insights into star formation, galaxy evolution, and the interstellar medium. By capturing detailed ultraviolet images and spectra, UVEX will help unravel the complex processes that shape our universe.

As a Junior/Assistant Specialist on the UVEX project, you will be responsible for:

  • Analyzing data and outputs from theoretical models.
  • Writing and maintaining code for data processing and analysis.
  • Attending project meetings and collaborating with team members.
  • Writing documentation to support research and mission objectives.
  • Presenting findings to the research team and at scientific conferences.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree or enrolled in a bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) program

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with data analysis related to physics or astronomy.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to address issues
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work with demanding time-frames
