Assistant Project Scientist - Global Seismology - Berkeley Seismological Lab
The Global Seismology Group at UC Berkeley conducts research on deep earth structure from the upper mantle to the inner core using forward and inverse seismological data and methodologies with the goal of understanding the dynamics and evolution of our planet. We seek individuals with strong seismic data analysis and modeling skills to participate in our research on upper mantle and inner core structure.
Appointment: This position reports to Prof. Barbara Romanowicz and will be working at the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory at UC Berkeley.
The specific responsibilities of the position are to 1) assemble a dataset of teleseismic and regional waveforms and develop a high resolution model of the upper mantle beneath Alaska using full waveform inversion, and in particular use it for correcting and 2) complement an existing global dataset of travel time, amplitude and slowness anomalies for body wave phases sensitive to inner core structure and, in collaboration with geodynamicists and mineral physicists, test different possible models for the development of seismic anisotropy in the inner core.
