A reasonable estimate for this position is $78,000-$94,300 annually.

Position description

The Sudmant lab in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley are seeking applications for an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist.

Position Overview:

The Sudmant lab studies genetic and molecular phenotypic diversity at both the organismal and cellular level. We study the evolution, causes, and consequences of aging as well as the evolution of genome structure and cellular diversity. Our lab analyzes, integrates, and generates massive-scale genomic datasets, a scientific approach that leverages computational biology and statistics as well as wet-lab and high-throughput experimental methods.

This position will focus on leading scientific projects pertaining to evolutionary biology, population genetics, conservation genetics, and bioinformatics using computational and statistical approaches. A major focus of the project scientist's work will be to lead and assist in projects related to structural variation evolution in various organisms, including rockfish, humans and non-human primates, as well as to study broad patterns of structural variation diversity across the tree of life.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead research projects in the lab related to structural variation in various study systems by carrying out computational analyses
  • Supervise other lab employees and undergraduate researchers, a maximum of one employee, as needed.
  • Perform quantitative analyses of various forms of sequencing data, interpret, and present data
  • Draft and publish scientific manuscripts outlining results
  • Contribute to lab collaborative projects
  • Contribute to grant writing and securing funding to support research

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Conceive, design, and execute studies to interrogate structural variation evolution in various organisms using a combination of publicly available and newly generated datasets.
  • Work closely with collaborating labs to move projects forward.
  • Publish and contribute to academic papers.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree).

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
2+ years of post PhD research experience in an academic or industry research setting.

Demonstrated record of productivity and publications.

Preferred qualifications

  • Ph.D (or equivalent) in genetics, genomics, biology, computer science or related fields.
  • Computational genomics skills especially related to the analysis of large, long-read and short-read genome sequencing datasets.
  • Strong background in evolutionary biology, particularly regarding various forms of genetic variation and its relevance in adaptation and speciation in order to conceive, design, carry out, and troubleshoot evolutionary genomic projects, and to apply cutting-edge computational methods to analyze datasets.
  • Extensive experience with analysis of short-read and long-read sequencing data of various quality in diverse study systems, familiarity with the analysis of single nucleotide variant and structural variant in the context of population and conservation genomic studies, and track record of mastering new techniques and technologies.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary collaborations as well as demonstrated ability to mentor students, manage active collaborations with other academic groups, and work independently.
  • Track record of developing and applying new computational and statistical methods tailored to analyzing novel datasets.
  • Strong coding skills in Python and/or R.
  • Excellent organizational management; demonstrated ability to multi-task within demanding time-frames, working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with version control (e.g. git and GitHub), workflow management tools (e.g. Snakemake and Nextflow), and computer clusters.
