Join Our Team at the School of Biological Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

The School of Biological Sciences (SBS), part of the College of Science, was established in 2002 with a mission to advance biological and biomedical sciences. At SBS, our research spans various areas, including infectious diseases, immunology, neurodegenerative diseases, telomere biology, and genome function. Over the years, SBS has attracted talented individuals from around the world and Singapore to join as scientific leaders and researchers.

Position Available: Project Officer

The project will focus on examining early splenic innate immune responses during Plasmodium infection. In particular, the study aims to uncover the biological roles of specific Plasmodium interspersed repeats (PIRs) multigene members across P. yoelii, the rodent malaria infection model, and P. knowlesi, the zoonotic parasite causing significant human morbidity in Southeast Asia. Understanding the interplay between the host innate immune responses and the parasitic factors involved will not only deepen our understanding of Plasmodium pathogenesis, but it will also directly contribute to novel intervention strategies and possibly better clinical management against P. vivax, P. knowlsei, and other potential zoonotic infections in humans.

Key Responsibilities:

The candidate will work with P. yoelii parasites to identify and characterize the potential immune evasion/modulation biological roles of specific Plasmodium interspersed repeats (PIRs) multigene members using the rodent malaria infection model. He/she will also work on understanding the possible co-regulatory expression mechanisms of these ~800 multigene members. These will be studied using a range of biochemical, cellular and molecular biological techniques.

Job Requirements:

  • BSc in Biosciences with focus on cell biology / molecular biology / immunology.

  • Experience in malaria parasite research is preferred.

  • Experience in parasite/mammalian cell culture and animal handling (mouse) is essential.

  • Experience in mouse model immunity, biochemical, cellular and molecular biology methods, such as qPCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, and western blotting, is critical.

  • Experience in bioinformatics work such as RNAseq analysis is a bonus.

  • Strong publication track record.

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaborative working, to be self-motivated, well-organized and focused.

The College of Science seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.

We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
