Departmental Overview

The teaching and research activities of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) concern the molecular structures and processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of living organisms.

The department is divided into multiple Divisions, and the Cox Lab is primarily affiliated with Immunology and Molecular Medicine Division which consists of 17 faculty whose research investigates fundamental mechanisms of immune system function and regulation, cancer biology, tumor immunology, and infectious disease.

Responsibilities

• Assists with experiments investigating the basic biology of interactions between bacterial pathogens (including Mycobacterium tuberculosis) and mammalian hosts.
• Oversees mammalian cell culture, specifically, culture of immortalized progenitor lines of neutrophils and macrophages and generation of new cell lines in which specific genes have been targeted using CRISPR.
• Coordinates vendors in procurement and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Applies and carries out basic molecular/cell biology techniques such as DNA cloning, qPCR, transfection, lentivirus production to overexpress and silence gene expression in mammalian cell culture.
• Manages ordering/stocking laboratory supplies, preparation of lab stocks, laboratory maintenance.
• Uses Biochemical techniques such as SDS-PAGE, affinity purification, western blotting.
• Assist other researchers in making technical determinations and observations based on the research.
• Assists with research analysis and presents results at group meetings or in meetings with supervisor(s)
• Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Experience with basic pipetting technique, molecular cloning and culture of mammalian cells.
• Ability to independently make solutions based on molarity and % composition.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with molecular biology, especially working with nucleic acids.
• Experience with protein biochemistry techniques such as expression of proteins in E. Coli and analysis by SDS-PAGE or western blot.
• Manipulation of mammalian cells by transfection or viral transduction.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $27.44 (step 4.0) - $28.70 (step 6.0).

• This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
• This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
