to join a starting, large collaborative research project PREIN (Photonics Research and Innovation Flagship). PREIN is a multi-disciplinary competence cluster focusing on the development of light-based technologies for applications in life science, energy-saving, ICT, and environmental monitoring. PREIN is a national network that gathers the cutting-edge expertise in photonics in Finland, including Aalto University, Tampere University, University of Eastern Finland and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. Job description
Your goal will be to carry out high quality research independently and to work as an active member of the research groups in Aalto University and other three partner institutions of PREIN. The positions also involve some teaching assistant duties (guiding of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students).
Position 1. Simulation and modelling of nanomaterials/structures/devices
The aim of the position is to simulate and model various nanomaterials, structures and devices to facilitate the research and innovation in PREIN. We expect a successful candidate to show prominence in one or several of the following sub-fields: resonant light-matter interaction effects at nanoscale; control of light generation, propagation, and absorption with optical metasurfaces and metamaterials; nanostructures in light harvesting devices; optical sensing and detection with nanostructures; control of optical coherence and polarization by nanostructures.

Position 2. Fabrication of nanomaterials/structures/devices
The objective of this position is to fabricate integrated nanomaterials, structures and photonics devices. We expect the successful candidate to show prominence in one or several of the following sub-fields: fabrication of 2D materials and their heterostructures; fabrication of functional materials with atomic layer deposition method; atomic layer deposition for photovoltaics and sensing; fabrication of semiconductor nanowires and quantum dots-based devices; fabrication of hybrid mixed-dimensional structures-based devices.

Position 3. Photonics-based energy devices
The aim of this position is to develop and study photonics-based energy devices. We expect the successful candidate to have relevant background for one or several of the of the following sub-fields:  heterojunction solar cells; photoluminescence imaging; up- and down-conversion materials for light harvesting; photocatalysts for water splitting and CO2 reduction; thermophotonic devices.
Research groups

These postdoctoral research positions will be part of the photonics research groups in the Micronova research center ( The Micronova research center houses the largest academic cleanroom facility (2600 m2) in northern Europe. Micronova supports the research of over 200 researchers who carry out research in a number of fields such as quantum technologies, photonics, renewable energy and microsystems to name just a few. Aalto University shares this joint facility and provides access to over 100 production and measurement equipment for research and innovation.

The partnering research groups have complementary expertise and skills, ranging from the design and fabrication of nanomaterials and optical components to system integration and instrumentation development. Our research focuses on light field control, new materials and structures, and the development of light sources with tailored characteristics, all seeding to the development of novel technologies ranging  e.g. from portable sensors, to LIDAR for environmental and industrial monitoring or smart photovoltaic modules for eco-efficient solutions.

Your experience and qualifications
We are looking for versatile and independent researchers with a solid background in related topics. Theoretical traits for the analysis of experimental work and the ability to supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D. students are additional benefits. Successful candidate holds a doctoral degree in a suitable field and a proven publication record. The positions are primarily targeted towards scientists who have received their doctorate in the past few years. Excellent command of written and oral English, good communication skills, as well as a research experience in both independent project work and collaborative environment are highly valued.

Salary and contract terms
These postdoctoral candidate positions will be filled for one to two years, with a possible extension for additional two years. The expected starting salary is approximately 3600 €/month, depending of your experience and qualifications, and will increase according to performance over time. The contract includes occupational health benefits, holiday bonus, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. Preferable starting time is the autumn of 2019, but this can be also negotiated.
