The Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a full-time (100%) Assistant Research Physicist, with an expected start date of November 1, 2019.
The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) seeks applicants for an Assistant Research Physicist position, specifically in the area of Mars aeronomy, solar wind interaction with the upper atmosphere of Mars, and solar wind plasma physics, with an emphasis on science operations for and data analysis from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) and the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) missions.
The Assistant Research Physicist will engage in independent and collaborative research, attend and actively support scientific seminars, workshops, working team meetings and other venues for presentations of results and development of collaborative research relationships, vigorously pursue publication of research in peer reviewed journals and pursue additional funding opportunities consistent with existing and future research programs and goals.
The positions will be associated with one or more of the following instruments, developed by our group: the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer (SWIA), the Solar Wind Electron Analyzer (SWEA), the Solar Energetic Particle (SEP), and the SupraThermal and Thermal Ion Composition (STATIC) instruments onboard MAVEN, as well as the Solar Probe ANalyzer (SPAN) ion and electron sensors onboard PSP.
Basic qualifications (at time of application):
-PhD or equivalent international degree.
Additional qualifications (by start date):
-One or more years of postdoctoral experience.
-Record of research publications since PhD degree.
-PhD in physics, astronomy or equivalent international degree.
-Two years of postdoctoral experience in aeronomy, solar wind and space plasma physics.
-Familiarity with the physics of the solar wind acceleration and interactions with planetary atmospheres, pickup ions, atmospheric escape from planets (i.e. Mars and Venus) and model-data comparisons of the planet-solar wind interaction is desirable.
-In-house data analysis software is written in IDL, so IDL experience is preferable and experience with data processing and use and production of CDF files.
-Analytical and programming skills.
Starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
