Qualities sought in potential PhD students –
1. Good knowledge of fundamentals,
2. Being able to do experiments,
3. Ability to do programming/simulations.
All three are equally important as the projects involve both experiments and modeling.

About Prof. Ranganathan Gopalakrishnan: Dr. Ranganathan Gopalakrishnan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Memphis. He obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2013 specializing in aerosol physics. He has done postdoctoral stints at CalTech and UC Berkeley before joining the University of Memphis in 2016. Research in Dr. Gopalakrishnan’s lab focuses on understanding particle behavior in aerosols, dusty plasmas, ionized gases, and powder flows. Our research is funded by ~$2.3M in funding from National Science Foundation, US Dept. of Energy, US Army, NASA-JPL including the DOE EARLY CAREER award for the year FY2020. He has published 26 peer-reviewed articles, one US patent. So far, he has supervised 7 MS and 3 PhD students towards graduation. His research group currently consists of 5 PhD students.
