Position description

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior/Assistant Specialist in the Gomez Lab, in the area of behavioral neuroscience.

The Gomez lab uses molecular biology, electrophysiology, and functional imaging to decode the instructive cues that organize neural networks. We focus on mechanisms that specify synaptic properties and determine how these properties bias the timescales of neuronal computation. We are working to discover how synaptic dysfunction manifests in conditions like autism, intellectual disability, and neurodegeneration. The project is a highly collaborative effort consisting of a team of researchers located at UC Berkeley, UCSF, and Stanford. Within UC Berkeley, the successful candidate will have access to multiple departments, including molecular and cell biology and neuroscience.

This position will develop and conduct behavioral experiments in mice, that align with the Gomez Lab's investigation on the molecular and cellular basis of cognitive flexibility.

This position will have a focus in mouse behavior and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of planned behavior experiments. The incumbent will be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles, and engaging in discussions on research design and execution as well as the interpretation of research results. The incumbent will design and implement behavior experiments relevant to the research conducted in the Gomez Lab. The position will be required to manage a mouse colony, including but not limited to mouse husbandry, genotyping, anesthesia, euthanasia. The incumbent will be required to keep a detailed record of genotyping results.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) program.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree).

Preferred qualifications

• 1 year of post-degree research experience in a neurobiology lab
• Bachelor's degree in an area of molecular and cell biology or neurobiology, such as biochemistry, genetics or cell biology, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience with mouse husbandry.
• At least 1 year of mouse colony management experience.
• At least 1 year of mouse handling experience and training.
• Procedural, experimental, and observational experience with mouse behavior experiments.
• Wet lab technique experience.
• Genotyping experience.
• Electrophysiology experience.
• Experience with OLAC facilities and processes.
• Ability to work independently.
• Able to communicate across different teams.
• Demonstrated proficiency to work as part of a research team.
• Familiarity with mixed-effects linear regression modeling for animal behavior experiments.
