Description
The Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to join an interdisciplinary research team studying how interactions among policies, markets, farmers' decisions, and ecosystems affect multiple ecosystem services on farms in the Central Coast of California, an area of intensive agricultural production where tradeoffs between crop production, environmental quality, and wildlife are widespread. The Postdoc will be based in the Boettiger Lab at UC Berkeley. Specifically, working with the team, the postdoc will assess alternative social-ecological scenarios through a Markov Decision Process (MDP) model, based on understanding developed of how policies and regulations affect farmers' decisions around sustainability and crop production, and the resulting suite of ecosystem services. This project is supported by a National Science Foundation Coupled Natural-Human Systems Award. Details available at: https://nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1824871

Duties:
  • Develop and strengthen skills in modeling coupled natural-human systems and decision-theoretic approaches such as MDP
  • Help design, parameterize, and explore the behavior of the MDP model under these scenarios
  • Develop and assist with statistical analyses of both natural and social science data collected by the research team.
  • Work with a diverse team of natural and social scientists, assist team members with quantitative statistical analysis of datasets
  • To contribute to at least 2 papers per year in widely read journals
  • Assist with data management and data integration
  • Assist with the development of code and software supporting this research
  • Provide oversight to undergraduate and graduate students as appropriate
