The School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology is a central and highly active School in the life sciences at UCC with a broad focus on the modern disciplines of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, including Molecular and Synthetic Biology and Bioinformatics, as well as the application of these areas in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Biotechnology.

The School has a strong research ethos, and an excellent track record of publication in high impact journals and securing competitive research funding. Research is clustered in three areas: Cancer Biology, Neuroscience and an emerging area of Synthetic Biology. Several Biochemistry staff members are also embedded in externally funded research centres in the University. The School has been at the forefront in developing externally funded structured PhD programmes in Cancer Biology and Molecular Cell Biology, and also offers MRes programmes and one-year MSc programmes in Biotechnology and Molecular Cell Biology with Bio-innovation. The immediate ambition of the School is to expand its high-quality research in line with the University’s plan to support excellence in research and to promote and develop top quality graduate training in the broad area of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. In addition to the flagship BSc degree in Biochemistry, the School is a key contributor to four other BSc degrees (Biomedical Science, Genetics, Biotechnology and Medicine and Health Sciences) in collaboration with Schools in SEFS and Medicine, and also contributes to Medicine, Graduate Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy degree programmes in the pre-clinical years.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a doctorate in Biochemistry or a relevant area and demonstrate a proven commitment to leadership and excellence in research and teaching as evidenced by a scholarly reputation of international standing. She/he should lead a research programme compatible with research activity of the School, in line with national and international funding strategies, and ideally but not restricted to the area of cancer research. She/he is expected to have a strong track record of sustained peer-reviewed publications and will have a record of fostering a culture of teaching and research excellence. She/he is expected to take a leadership role in the School.

The Professor of Biochemistry will have access to facilities and research space within the School and will also have opportunities to associate with and contribute to the development of existing research centres and Institutes in the School and UCC.
