The Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics (APAM) at Columbia University in the City of New York invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor or associate professor faculty position in Applied Physics, ideally starting July 1, 2025. APAM is a highly multi-disciplinary department investigating fundamental math, physics, and materials science problems underlying critical applications in science and engineering ranging from Plasma/Fusion physics to Climate dynamics.

For this search, the Department seeks candidates with research interests in plasma physics, particularly those emphasizing applications to pressing societal challenges. Examples of applications can include but are not limited to: fusion energy, electric propulsion, materials processing, and microelectronics.

While candidates at the junior level are preferred, exceptional candidates at the tenured Associate Professor or Professor levels will also be considered. 

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Nuclear, Aero/Astro, or related areas by the start date of the appointment. Applicants for this position at the tenure-track Assistant Professor and Associate Professor levels must have the potential to do pioneering research and teach effectively. Applicants for this position at the tenured Associate or Full Professor level must have a demonstrated record of outstanding research accomplishments, excellent teaching credentials, and established leadership in the field.

Candidates at all levels must be able to demonstrate the ability to develop a highly successful and internationally recognized independent research program and to participate effectively in the teaching of our core applied physics, plasma physics, and/or related applied science curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate level. Columbia encourages multi-disciplinary research and collaborations across academic units on the campus. The Department is particularly interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Hiring Salary Range: Professor: 134K-305K; Associate Professor (tenured): 123K-175K; Associate Professor (without tenure): 115K-163K; Assistant Professor: 110K-142K
