Project: exploring n-type semiconductors for organic thermoelectrics

We are seeking an exceptional research associate to work on the characterization and doping of organic semiconductors for thermoelectric applications, where the successful candidate will be a member of Omegalab and mentored by Prof. Baran. The competitive candidate should hold a PhD degree in Chemistry, Physics or Engineering and have a combined expertise in device physics, solution processed semiconductors and device fabrication, have a great proven publication track record, and excellent oral and written communications skills in English. The candidate will be a team player dedicated to attaining first-authored publications in high-impact journals and cultivating skills as a colleague and also as a mentor, devoting a portion of their time to mentoring graduate students in the group and developing new research directions.

Organic thermoelectrics is an emerging field of study that explores the application of semiconducting polymers and organic small molecules as means to produce electric power from temperature gradients. Unlike most of the inorganic counterparts, organic thermoelectric materials can be easily processed in solution, are highly abundant, conformable, printable, inherently flexible, poses much lower toxicity, and display better performance at room temperature.

Although P-type organic thermoelectric materials have shown a steady progress, the advancement of N- type materials has been significantly slower, mainly due to their low conductivity and sensitivity to oxidation in air. This is of great importance as both N and P type materials are required to fabricate an efficient thermoelectric generator.

Applications are sought for an anticipated 2-year position (the initial appointment will be for 1 year, with reappointment for a 2nd year contingent on performance).
