Job Summary: The School of Polymer Science and Engineering invites applications a postdoctoral research position focused in the area of multifunctional polymer nanocomposites. The position is collaborative and will be jointly advised by Profs. Derek Patton and Sarah Morgan. The ideal candidate would have a background in polymer synthesis (thermoplastic and/or thermoset chemistries), polymer processing (extrusion, 3D printing, etc.), and polymer characterization (NMR, XPS, thermomechanical analysis). The initial appointment is for one year, with the potential for continuation based on the progression of the project and availability of funding.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
1. Conduct research related to the synthesis, processing, and characterization of multifunctional polymer nanocomposites
2. Engage in mentorship and supervision of graduate and undergraduate student research
3. Communicate the results of research to a spectrum of stakeholders via preparation of high quality technical reports,
peer reviewed journal articles, and formal and informal presentations.
4. Participate in writing grant proposals
5. Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
1. Earned Ph.D. in polymer science and engineering or a closely related discipline
2. Demonstrated record of intellectual and academic accomplishments evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations
3. Ability to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or to have an approved legal exemption and/or accommodation on file with Human Resources prior to your anticipated start date

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Self-motivated and ability to work effectively, collaboratively, and collegially in a team environment with scientists and engineers representing diverse backgrounds, skills, and experience levels
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with 2D fillers (graphene, boron nitride, etc.) preferred but not required
  • Candidates should have strong experimental experience and a track record of successful research

About the School: SPSE comprises faculty members with research programs in polymer composites, biomaterials and bioinspired polymers, materials for energy and sustainability, optoelectronic materials, and coatings and thin films with external funding totaling ~$27M over the past three years. SPSE offers state-of-the-art facilities for polymer-related research including a shared thermal/thermomechanical analysis suite, 400/600 MHz NMR spectrometers, SAXS/WAXS laboratory beamline, XPS/UPS spectrometer, magnetic characterization, AC/DC SQUID magnetometer, ESR, polymer processing (extrusion/injection molding), composite fabrication facilities, and computing capabilities. SPSE is home to ~80 Ph.D. students and ~100 undergraduate students; it offers polymer science and engineering degrees at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels.
