Position description

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Project Scientist in the Ingolia Lab, in the area of activity-dependent control of translation in neurons.

The Ingolia lab studies the molecular mechanisms of post-transcriptional gene regulation and the cellular and organismal roles of regulated protein synthesis. Regulated translation in neurons is important for potentiation and homeostasis; defects in neuronal translational control are associated with neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. This project seeks to map the regulated translational programs associated with neuronal activity using new tools we have developed for this purpose.

The duties of the position include:

  • Conducing molecular biology and genomics experiments in cultured primary mouse neurons
  • Neuroscience experiments in mice, including viral delivery of expression constructs
  • Analysis of mouse brain samples, including fluorescence microscopy and expansion microscopy
  • RNA-seq and ribosome profiling library construction and sequencing
  • Designing, executing, and troubleshooting experiments in molecular neuroscience
  • Computational and statistical analysis of high-throughput sequencing data
  • Attending scientific seminars, meetings, and workshops and presenting research findings
  • Pursuing publication of research in peer-reviewed journals
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative research relationships
  • Pursuing funding opportunities consistent with the research program
  • Planning and developing new research directions related to current work
  • Training and mentoring lab members

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Preferred qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Physiology, Neuroscience, or related field.
  • Experience with high-throughput sequencing, RNA sequencing, and ribosome profiling
  • Experience with proximity-dependent protein labeling
  • Experience with calcium-dependent activity reporters
  • Experience with calcium-dependent protein labeling technologies
  • Experience with neuronal culture
  • Experience with mouse husbandry and neurobiology
  • Ability to develop and troubleshoot new methods and techniques
  • Ability to identify and pursue exciting questions in cellular and molecular neurobiology
  • Outstanding writing and communication skills
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journal
  • Ability and desire to contribute to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
