The Professor of Risk Resilience will lead a robust research programme in climate and disaster risk resilience. The goal is to produce top-quality research while building local knowledge and capacity through outreach, collaboration and partnerships. The Professor must be a person of professional integrity with strong leadership and communication skills.
The successful applicant will:
- Develop and lead Pacific Islands focused research projects in quantitative risk assessment at the physical and social science interface.
- Utilise robust innovative research tools which may include anthropology, remote sensing, food security quantitative modeling, disaster risk management and reduction, disaster recovery and policy.
- Lead a robust research team that takes advantage of USP’s unique role as a Pacific Islands regional university and attracts external funding.
- Exemplify and promote collaborative research within PaCE-SD, across the faculties and programmes of the university and across the Pacific Islands region in collaboration within CROP and Donor partners.
- Develop and deliver post graduate courses in risk based approach for climate and disaster resilience to be offered through the flexible learning programme.
- Supervise MSc and PhD research students.
- Publish research findings in high quality peer reviewed outlets.
- Work as an integral member of the vibrant culturally diverse PaCE-SD team.
- Respect, contribute to and support PaCE-SD in accordance with USP policies and procedures.
The Person We Seek
To be considered for this position, applicants must have:
- A PhD in risk resilience, climate change, disaster risk management or related field from a recognised institution;
- Extensive teaching and research students supervision experience;
- Demonstrated research leadership and a distinguished record of research and publication;
- Strategic leadership skills;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Writing and presentation skills in English;
- Demonstrated ability to perform as a strong team player;
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
Preference will be given to applicants with:
- At least 10 years of experience in research and tertiary teaching (significant research led contribution in a professional environment may be counted towards this requirement if appropriate);
- Pacific research experience;
- Experience in research or development projects, implementation and/ or administration;
- Fluency in at least 1 of the regional languages of the Pacific Islands is desirable.
The position is available for a term of 5 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.
Salary Range: Professor FJ $129,078 to FJ $139,543 per annum
The University may pay an inducement allowance to secure the services of an exceptionally well qualified candidate.
In addition to the above benefits, the University contributes 10% of basic salary to an approved superannuation scheme, provides airfare and relocation costs where appropriate.
